Learning the Bulgarian (Cyrrilic)
alphabet easily.

Bulgaria, Notary Office Sign - a Notary is someone who does all
of your legal work - it literally translates as Notarioos. Would
you be able to find their office?
The cyrillic alphabet is not as difficult as it at first might
appear, and even though I know Brits who can still read very little,
even after 5 years living in Bulgaria, they are missing out on
so much. Many of the words in Bulgarian, when you have changed
the cyrillic letters into latin, actually say something in english.
This is how
I taught myself to read words written in the Cyrillic
Alphabet - it took me a couple of days to be quite competent,
and I can now read anything, although I can only understand the
words
that actually say something in english.
The first thing to learn is that several letters of the Cyrillic
alphabet look and sound exactly like their Latin counterparts,
and therefore once they are recognised as such then they are effectively
learnt. These letters are E, K, M, O, A, and T. I remember this:
MAKE TEA – because all of the letters within that remain
the same.
There are characters that you may not recognise, and I found ways
to remember them that may also work for you:-
Ф - This letter sounds like our letter F. I remember it
because it resembles a fish eye, which begins with the letter F.
Г - This letter looks like our R, but sounds like G. In
many cases with Cyrillic I came up with three letter words to help
me memorise the Cyrillic and the sound, the first letter representing
the Cyrillic, and the last the letter in our alphabet. I remember
this letter by memorising the word RaG.
Р - This letter sounds like our R. I memorise the word PaR.
Д - This letter looks loosely like the letter D, which is
what it also sounds like, so I found that one quite easy to remember.
П - This letter looks like our N, but sounds like our P.
I memorised the word NaP.
Л - This letter looks like a pair of Legs, which reminds
me that the sound is L.
З - This letter looks like a number 3, but also looks like
the letter Z, which is what it is.
И - This letter is an additional vowel, being the equivalent
of our letter i.
Б - This letter is the equivalent of our B.
Н - This letter sounds like our letter N, and I remember
it by memorising the word HuN.
В - This letter sounds like our V, and I remember it by
memorising the word BeV.
Х - This letter may be difficult to remember.
To us it is the letter X, which in Arabic makes a sound
SH, but in Bulgarian it makes the sound H. I remember it by memorising
the word SHaH.
С - This letter makes the sound S, which hopefully is quite
easy to remember. It makes that sound in the word City.
У - This letter represents the sound OO as in COOL.
Я - This letter represents the sound YA as in the name Sonya,
and is often found at the end of a word.
Ж - This letter represents the sound ZH as in VISION.
Ю - This letter looks like a combination of our letters
IO, and that is roughly what it literally sounds like, as in CLIO.
