Bulgaria - the City of Varna

Bulgaria, Varna Street Scene
With a population of around 360,000, Varna is the third largest
city in Bulgaria. Because of the location of Varna - on the Black
Sea - and thus its' being at the centre of the seaside tourist
areas, it is known as the summer capital of Bulgaria.
But Varna is much more than that, it is a major Port, it is the
administrative city of the Varna Province, and in 2008 became the
designated seat of the Black Sea Euro Region.
Varna is in an area of very early human prehistory, and in the
lakes, springs and caves of the area, evidence has been found of
over
30 settlements
dating back over 100,000 years - which is the Middle Paleolithic
era.
The area was ruled by the Thracians by at least 1000 BC, and by
the 7th century BC it was known as Odessos. The area surrendered
to Alexander the Great in 335BC.
By the 1st century AD, Varna was under the control of Rome, and
was known as Odessus, During the times of Roman control many Roman
buildings were erected, including the Public Baths (Thermae), which
is now the largest Roman remains in Bulgaria. It was during this
time that Bulgaria became a Christian country, and Odessus was
at the forefront of it.
By at least the 7th century, the name appears to have changed
from Odessus to the Slavic name Varna, following the Slav conquest.
